Grand Rapids – DeVos Place is seeking artist submissions for Between Worlds: Where Memory Lives, a juried exhibition inspired by the traditions and enduring spirit of Día de los Muertos. The exhibition will be on display October 9 through November 21, 2026, at DeVos Place Convention Center in downtown Grand Rapids.
Across cultures and generations, people find meaningful ways to honor and remember those who came before them. Día de los Muertos transforms remembrance into a celebration of life, memory, ancestry and the connections that remain after someone is gone. Between Worlds: Where Memory Lives invites artists to explore these universal themes through personal, creative expression.
Artists are encouraged to submit work reflecting on memory, ancestry, family, identity, loss, celebration or the ways individuals and communities honor those who have shaped their lives. Eligible media include painting, drawing, photography, mixed media and installation. In addition, two ofrendas will be selected for inclusion in the exhibition.
Both traditional and contemporary interpretations are welcome. Artists are not required to incorporate specific Día de los Muertos imagery, and work that explores broader themes of remembrance and human connection is welcome.
“Día de los Muertos reminds us that memory is a living connection between past and present,” said juror Margaret Vega, Professor Emerita, artist and curator. “For this exhibition, I am interested in work that explores remembrance and ancestry, loss and celebration through a personal and authentic voice. I welcome both traditional and contemporary interpretations of how artists give form to what—and whom—we carry with us.”
The exhibition will be juried by Vega and will feature awards for Best of Show and People’s Choice.
